What is Pain Reprocessing Therapy?

Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) was primarily developed by Alan Gordon, LCSW and Howard Schubiner, MD. Importantly the therapy is based of the work of pioneering mind-body doctor- John Sarno, MD.

PRT uses the science of neuroplasticity to rewire your brain from chronic pain and other symptoms. The therapy uses cognitive and somatic therapy techniques that train your brain to let go of symptoms.

What Pain Reprocessing Therapy Can Help With

PRT has been clinically shown to work in chronic back pain. It also can help people with vulvodynia, chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS), prostatitis, fibromyalgia, and other pains where the doctor says- “There’s nothing medically wrong with you”. While the word Pain is highlighted in Pain Reprocessing Therapy, the therapy can help with many mind-body syndromes. Other mind-body syndromes PRT supports- Long Covid, POTS- Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, chronic fatigue, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and more.

“Neck, shoulder, and back pain syndromes are not mechanical problems to be cured by mechanical means. They have to do with people’s feelings, their personalities, and the vicissitudes of life.”
John E. Sarno, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection

What Happens During The Therapy

First off, we take a compassionate in-depth history of your pain or chronic illness history.  We deeply understand the hardships these syndromes can cause. Then we teach the main components of Pain Reprocessing Therapy which include reframing the pain signals as not harmful, and somatic tracking. These important skills help you rewire your brain.

Additionally, many with these syndromes have trauma histories and struggle with emotional suppression or anxiety. We teach nervous system regulation skills which helps you to find inner safety. Also, we might use Emotion Awareness and Expression Therapy for emotional release. Overall we have a lot of tools in our brain retraining tool box! Pain management is not the goal, recovery or feeling a lot better is!

FAQ

Are you saying my pain is all in my head?

No way! Pain is very real and we take your suffering seriously. Pain comes primarily from the brain. Importantly, we understand how terrible it feels to hear your doctor say- “It’s all in your head”. We do use pain psychology methods, but they are meant to rewire your brain and nervous system.

How long does treatment take for pain relief?

The treatment time honestly varies from individual to individual. Importantly, one of the most important factors of recovery is believing in this work. Some people even experience the “book cure” after reading one of John Sarno’s books or Alan Gordon’s book! Overall, Pain Reprocessing Therapy teaches the concept of outcome independence. Basically, this means that the more pressure you put on yourself to recover, the longer it can take.

How is this different from pain management therapy?

Pain management teaches you to live with your pain. While it is a compassionate approach, Pain Reprocessing Therapy teaches you to rewire your brain neural pathways. There is a lot of new science around pain, how the brain perceives pain, and how emotions and pain/ chronic illness are intertwined. Overall, we incorporate all of these important points into our therapy.
